I recently got my hands on the Sony BRAVIA Theater U Wearable TV Speaker, and I have to say, this device has changed my entertainment experience. As a tech enthusiast and a big gamer, I was intrigued by the idea of a wearable speaker, and it did not disappoint.
First off, the design is very sleek and the speaker rests comfortably on my shoulders without feeling too bulky or heavy, which was one of my initial concerns. The materials feel premium, and the bottom of the speakers has a nice pleather coating that ensures that it stays in place while sitting upright or even laying down while at an angle. After a few minutes, I would hardly notice that I even had it on, which just goes to show for its ergonomic design.
The sound quality is where the BRAVIA Theater U truly shines. The audio is clear, rich, and immersive, engulfing you in a surround sound experience that is quite impressive for such a compact device. Whether I’m watching a movie, playing a game, or taking a call, the sound comes from all around me, adding a new level of depth to my entertainment and work. This has been great for me and my significant other, who tends to go to bed early and I can just connect this to our TV and watch or play games without disturbing her. I feel like this product is perfect for those new parents, who want an immersive sound experience, but still want to be able to hear, in case the baby is crying. Or for those who don’t like having earbuds in their ears for long periods of time.
Now, for the part that I was most excited about pairing this with my PlayStation 5. The connection was seamless and straightforward, thanks to the included 3mm audio jack to USB-C and plugging right into your controller for being able to use the built in microphone. Once set up, the audio low latency was virtually non-existent, which is key for gaming. The 360 degree surround sound capabilities brought games like “Warzone” and “Spider-Man 2” to life. Every detail, from the ambient noises of the games were enhanced, making the gaming experience incredibly immersive.
Battery life in the Theater U Wearable is very solid, offering around 12 hours on a full charge, which is more than enough for using it during the day for work calls and then at the end of the day for some gaming or a couple of shows. Charging is straightforward with just unhooking the rubber flap and revealing the USB-C connection, and its Quick charging gives you up to 60 minutes of playback on a 10-minute charge. The controls are intuitively placed,on the left speaker to adjust the volume up or down and then a pause button in between those. Then on the right speaker is the mic mute button and the power and bluetooth pairing button. The ability of also being able to pair this to two devices at once is huge, especially if you are watching a show but you then get a phone call, you can easily switch between the two devices with its multi-point connection, take the call and as soon as you hang up go back to your movie or show.
While the BRAVIA Theater U Wearable TV Speaker is impressive, it’s not without its minor flaws. The price is on the higher side, which might be a deterrent for some. Additionally, while the sound quality is great, it is lacking bass compared to a soundbar or a home theater system. However, given the device’s versatility, portability and convenience, these are minor trade-offs.
Overall, the Sony BRAVIA Theater U Wearable TV Speaker is for those wanting an open ear sound device that can be used in multiple different environments. It offers a unique blend of high-quality audio and portability, enhancing both gaming and movie-watching experiences. If you’re looking for an immersive audio solution that allows you to stay mobile and comfortable, you can’t go wrong with the BRAVIA Theater U Wearable TV Speaker

I liked the idea of these and they delivered on performance and useability. I didn’t see any mention of the Sony headphones App so one of my first tests was to see if it was compatible, like my XM5s are. As I had hoped, they are and they keep track of some stats – hours used, firmware version and so on. As of June, 2024 – there weren’t any firmware updates but I imagine that’ll change after being in the wild for a few months.
I’m at about 13 hours of use and I found it easy to forget these were around my neck; queue going on camera with Zoom to remind me that I have some neck warmer-looking for all to see.
I’d say I’m at a solid 7 hours of continuous play and the rest would be standby time. The Bravia Theater U connects to a maximum of two other devices, also controllable via the App where you can disconnect devices that you may not want to be connected at that moment. For example, I’ll turn these on in the morning and it’ll connect to my phone, along with my living room TV; I don’t need it to connect to the TV, so I use the App to just drop that single connection.
I’ve used this for music, TV and movies and the sound does float around, which is pretty impressive as it resembles surround sound, but not surround sound that the entire house has to hear with you.
In actual real-world usage, unlike Marketing, I just draped them behind my neck and enjoyed what came out. If you wanted to hear the sound movement, tons of songs let you do so, but one that jumped out to me was the song by 311: Space and Time.
For the most part at the beginning, I was just watching TV. Looking off to the side, I noticed that the sound just about stops on the opposite side – very little if any sounds were noticeable. I often wear bone conduction headphones if I’m not using the TV speakers, so turning my head and losing all sound out of the other side was a bit strange to me. I don’t consider it a negative given that the entire house isn’t hearing what’s coming out of the speakers but it was noticeable.
Comparable to other Bluetooth headphones, the Theater U has about the same range through walls – I’d say roughly 40 paces before there are some sound cut-outs.
Pause, Volume up & down are present along with power on/off and mute, all of which are very tactile and easily found if you know where to grab. I have to remember what they are as I’m really not able to differentiate the + and – and pause buttons via touch.
USB-C charging is a welcomed relief but to be honest, I haven’t had to charge them in the past 5 days beyond the original charge and I still have around 60% battery life (down from 80% from the majority of the time I was using them).
They’re a premium device as are most of the Sony audio devices (of which I have a few) and deservingly so. So, if you are an audio enthusiast, enjoy TV and movie dialogue without having it so loud that other TV effects don’t need to rattle the house, then I say to pick these up.
If you have a surround system and love to be completely immersed in sound, then these may not be for you.
For me: Recommended!

The first thing I want to say about the Bravia Wearable headphones is WOW I LOVE THEM! I have never owned this style before and wasn’t sure how I’d like them but I am SOOOO sold on these. The sound in all venues is outstanding considering their size. They pair up immediately with whatever I choose to use them with ~ from my iPhone, Sony TV to a very inexpensive BT adapter for an older TV with no Bluetooth. Nothing ever wants to connect to that little adapter but it found this Bravia right away.
The sound just wraps all around you. Incredibly clear with no connection drops whatsoever. It has a very long range as well. I went all the way into my basement (and it’s a good piece away) and the signal was still strong from my living room TV. None of my other devices can accomplish that.
Battery life? EXCEPTIONAL. I literally wore these 13 hours straight from watching TV, on phone calls (which by the way has crystal clear clarity to myself and the caller) and listening to music. They synced up right away to my iMac computer as well. When I finally removed them the battery life was still at 60% and to say I was surprised is an understatement. Very pleased with that feature!
Also noted is how comfortable they are when wearing with the padding on the bottoms and very lightweight. I forget I have them on. So unlike wearing bulky over the ear headphones that hurt my head after 15 minutes or buds that begin to irritate my ears.
I downloaded the phone app and with the HEADPHONE SETTINGS you will see (1) Connected Devices (2) Equalizer (3) Bluetooth Connection Quality (4) Connect to 2 Devices Simultaneously (5) Automatic Power Off and (6) Notification & Voice Guide. Personally I found the settings to be perfect for me right out of the box. The APP SETTINGS are (1) Adaptive Sound Control (2) Activity Settings (3) 360 Reality Audio Setup and Ear Analysis Results ~ yes the app will photograph both your ears to be sure you have the best setup (4) Automatic Download Software Settings and (5) Notification Setting. I have a music channel that offers some of the 360 Spatial tunes but in my personal opinion the Bravia sounds fabulous with or without using it. No need to spend extra money just to get that feature ~ they are fine just as is.
One more thing is my husband is very hard of hearing. When he doesn’t have his hearing aids connected to his phone’s Bluetooth the TV is blasting me out of the house so I decided to have him try these on. Lo and behold he could hear the TV perfectly!! Smiles all around when we discovered that! So they are excellent for those who don’t hear so well too.
Even though the price range might not fit everyone’s budget I’d buy another pair of these in a heartbeat and probably will since the husband wants to use them and so do I. They are just so simple to operate, great size with nicely placed buttons and I honestly don’t know how I managed without them. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED folks! You will not be disappointed!

-– Summary: — Surprisingly great wearable speaker! Great sound, easy to use and very comfortable. Much better than using headphones or earbuds while watching TV. The only situation I found annoying was that after having paired it with 2 TVs, everytime I used the speaker on one TV and another person would turn the other TV on, it kept connecting to that other TV, leaving that other person without sound and wondering what happened, and leaving me listening to the other TV. Other reviewers say there’s an app you can use to disconnect from the TV you’re not using to make sure it won’t automatically connect, but I didn’t test that.
— Pros —
– Great sound! Even if your TV is not compatible with the 360 Spatial Sound (mine wasn’t), the sound is very immersive and certainly feels that it comes from multiple places when watching a movie. A much better experience than wearing headphones or earbuds which is what I hoped and I was pleasantly surprised that was the case without a doubt!
– Very comfortable. I could use it for hours sitting down or standing and forget I was wearing it. I probably couldn’t wear it for over an hour while lying down but even then it didn’t feel as uncomfortable as I thought it would.
– Not silent but very quiet! When someone is wearing it, others can barely hear the sound. This actually solved an issue my wife and I were having with our 7 year-old son who would shush us for speaking too loudly while he’d watch cartoons, right before proceeding to turn the TV volume way up. Earbuds wouldn’t work as they tend to fall off his tiny ears. When I placed this speaker on his shoulders, he loved it and no more arguments. We were all happy getting what each of us wanted: the adults wouldn’t be interrupted by a loud TV; and our kid wouldn’t be annoyed by not being able to hear due to adults talking loudly!
– Great battery life! I used it for a few days for a total of maybe 7 to 8 hours, mainly watching movies, and the speaker was still going strong! Sony claims you can get up to 12 hours and up to 60 minutes of playback on a 10-minute charge! This is fantastic!
– It’s nice to know that the speaker add function makes it possible to pair two BRAVIA Theater U’s at the same time so I can enjoy a TV show or movie with someone else. I didn’t test this though.
– All the control buttons (power on, pause, volume up/down, mute) are nicely on the inside of the speaker. I definitely appreciated the convenience of pausing/playing without having to use the TV remote.
— Good to know —
– If you really want the “360 Spatial Sound” feature, make sure you have a compatible TV. I thought mine was compatible because it was a Sony Bravia but didn’t pay attention to the models. It turns out mine is Sony Bravia A95K (not compatible) instead of the very similar model “A95L” (compatible, among others).
– If you have 2 TVs like me, beware that if you pair the speaker to both TVs, and you use one TV while someone else might use the other TV at the same time, the speaker might switch to connect to the other TV even if it’s further away! I wish it was smart enough to connect to the TV that is nearer. Other reviewers say there’s an app you can use to disconnect from the TV you’re not using to make sure it won’t automatically connect, but I didn’t test that.

First of all these are not comfortable, that thin plastic portion is constantly resting on the back of my neck and requires frequent repositioning. Second, literally these are just two speakers, very loud, and anyone sitting next to you will hear everything, but when maxing out sound, then anyone even a rokm away will hear everything. Thirdly, sound is not balanced, there is no surround sound at all, i even tried dolby sound videos, literally just feels like one speak on both sides, and these speakers appear to be trying to hard to push out big sound when in reality they are probably tiny. Fourthly, bass is somewhat there, but it fulky disappears by overly pushed other sounds. I played around with settings in the app, but result is exactly the same. These are not tiny, its like two long bulky speakers resting on each side of my shoulder, additionally they become useless when being in any other position but either sitting or standing straight up. My overall experience of these to sum it up is a product thats not powerful enough but just trying too hard to be simething they are not.

Mainly bought for playing games ,since I dont like to have my ears covered. It would be better if was able to paired wireless with the ps5.
Actually I play multilayer games using a 3.5 wiremic and works fine.
