The Samsung HW-Q990D 11.1.4 Q-Series soundbar with wireless subwoofer and rear speakers featuring Dolby Atmos is a great product for a home theater setup.
Pros:
• Packaging – The packaging was well thought out with the speakers and subwoofer separately secured in Styrofoam on the bottom and the soundbar placed on top. Even though the box took some damage during shipping nothing arrived broken. The way it was packed made unpacking quick and easy with not a lot of waste (all things considered).
• Setup – Of all the soundbar, subwoofer, speaker packages I have purchased in the past, the Samsung 11.1.4 Q-Series was the easiest to setup out of the box. While prior soundbars have given me issues with wireless connection to the subwoofer and/or speakers, the HW-Q990D worked without issue. There wasn’t anything extra required to pair them after plugging them in. I connected the system to my Epson ultra short throw projector in our theater room via ARC without any issue as well.
• Sound – The sound is fantastic for the price point and does not disappoint! With 11 front-facing speakers, 1 subwoofer with rich bass, and 4 up-firing channels I get the movie theater experience at home. One thing I noticed immediately was that I could hear the voices from TV shows and movies clearly, especially at low volume. The prior soundbar I had in the room made understanding dialogue difficult, notably during action packed/loud scenes and I would find myself having to put subtitles on. Samsung overcomes this through active voice analyzer and adaptive sound to optimize onscreen voices and it works amazingly. Sound Pro also analyzes the room, calibrates the system, and automatically adjusts the audio.
• Wall Mounting Kit – It is nice that the kit to mount the soundbar is included; however, no wall anchors are included. If Samsung is going to include the brackets, include appropriate standard wall anchors for the weight. I ended up having to make a trip to a local big box hardware store to get a set of anchors that would hold the weight of the soundbar.
Cons:
• Remote – The remote is not backlit and hard to see in the dark.
Overall, I love this soundbar and it gets a 100% recommendation from me.

The 990 series of sound bars is pretty awesome and the latest version of it does not disappoint, I’m a fan of the HDMI 2.1 passthrough as it works well with how I have it configured in my environment. Sound has been amazing, very happy with the night time features it offers as well. Overall a great product.

The Samsung HW-Q990D Soundbar is an impressive follow-up to last year’s flagship Q990C, which many considered the best Soundbar on the market. The Q990D maintains the same high-quality build, performance and understated style of its predecessor, the Q990C, while introducing some notable improvements.
The Q990D, like the Q990C, is a comprehensive four-piece Soundbar system that includes the main bar, a wireless subwoofer, and two wireless rear speakers. It supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X sound through an expansive 11.1.4 channels. The design of the Soundbar mirrors that of the Q990C, but it now includes HDMI 2.1 support, which is capable of handling 4K/120Hz signals. This is a substantial improvement over the Q990C, which did not support HDMI 2.1.
In terms of performance, the Q990D truly shines. It delivers an immersive Dolby Atmos and DTS:X sound experience. The clarity of the sound details is exceptional, allowing for a rich and nuanced audio experience. The precision and power of its effects placement are also noteworthy, creating a truly immersive audio environment. The subwoofer is incredibly powerful and seamlessly integrated, offering a strong low-frequency response.
When comparing the Q990D to the Q990C, the new model offers a similar performance with added features. The Q990C was already a high-end Soundbar, but the Q990D takes it a step further with HDMI 2.1 support and enhanced functionality for the rear speakers. When put up against other premium soundbars, the Q990D stands out due to its immersive sound experience and robust feature set.
If there’s are shortcomings, I feel a bar of this caliber would benefit from an on-screen display that aids in setup and making adjustments. The current display is cumbersome at best, and almost useless at worst. Fortunately, once you’ve connected the SmartThings app, you have much quicker and easier access to all of the bar’s adjustments. It’s also disappointing that there’s no form of room correction here. I understand that part of the goal is keeping it simple for consumers, but we are talking about a Soundbar at the premium end of the market, so I don’t feel that an on screen display that’s easy to read or a sound correction system to automatically tailor the sound to a particular room are unreasonable expectations.
In conclusion, the Samsung Q990D Soundbar is a worthy successor to the acclaimed Q990C. It retains the strengths of the Q990C while introducing several meaningful improvements. If you’re in the market for a premium Soundbar that offers an immersive and detailed sound experience, the Samsung Q990D won’t disappoint.

Not as good as my 5.2 Klisph surround setup… but still pretty awesome. While playing games you can tell what side the horse or cars comes from behind.

I’ve always had soundbars – and surround sound. But nothing that integrated completely/easily between components. Having a new Samsung tv, this was the answer. I can’t believe how easily this package set itself up. With setup instructions coming from the tv screen, it was truly plug & play. The hardest part was having to do a wall mount bracket for one of the rears. (Brackets are provided for the soundbar itself, but not the rear speakers.) Once I had it set up, I had to walk to the rear speakers to see the LED lit up blue showing connection as I didn’t want to believe my ears! Thank you Samsung, I’ve had fits connecting soundbars before, but not this time.
The first feature I encountered was Q-Symphony. When you have a compatible Samsung TV, the tv speakers work in conjunction with the soundbar. I felt this was superfluous and turned it off. Why should I have tv speakers competing with a top of the line soundbar? Your impression may vary. At least it’s easily disabled.
Another feature, Spacefit Sound Pro, I was more interested in. This “calibrates” and adjusts the sound based on your specific area & acoustics. Having a room that was more “open” on one side than another, this suited my purpose. Not knowing the mechanics of it, I assume it is pumping more sound to the open area to fill the gap, I can only report that there is a difference, and it does sound better with the feature activated.
The rear speakers are impressive units, and are front, top, and side firing. They appear well constructed and deliver a clean clear sound with no evidence of distortion, rattling, etc. If you don’t have a stand or mount for them, you will need to pick up a suitable product.
I’m not a student or disciple of surround sound, all I can say is I’ve been intrigued over the last week, hearing things in programming I haven’t heard before, even in commercials. There is content that I wouldn’t believe had been programmed for surround, yet I’m hearing distinctive sounds coming from the rear speakers – for instance, the Nascar race where you hear the sportscasters in the front, and the roar of the engines in the rear. Or maybe a commercial jingle pops different sounds out of the rear. I assume there is some decoding tech going on in the electronics, all I can say is I’m enjoying the hell out of it!
Also using the unit in combination with different devices, for instance, tapping on the soundbar with my Samsung phone to play content. Even more interesting, if you know what the Sound Burger is (a revival of an 80’s mini portable turntable, now with Bluetooth – photo down below), I’ve connected that to the Q series to pump out some tunes. Yes, I do have an audiophile turntable in the same room, but as that doesn’t use Bluetooth, I’ll need some kind of RCA to HDMI device to make that magic as the Q only provides HDMI inputs.
If there’s one thing I’d knock on the Q, I really don’t care for the LED screen behind the grill – it’s small & hard to see behind the grill. I would’ve preferred a small screen, perhaps on top, to better identify inputs – it’s very difficult to determine what Bluetooth device you’re connecting.
Other than that, very happy with the unit, and once again, thanks for making it so easy to hook up!

My go to choice for a soundbar setup has always been Samsung’s lineup. They sound great, setup is super easy and everything from movies to video games are always on point.
This Q990D is the Flagship model for a reason. My last one was the Q850T and going to this beast was a major upgrade for me.
In the box is the centerpiece itself (Bar), wireless sub, 2 wireless satellite surround sound speakers, remote and the various power cables and paperwork.
I set up this system in my game room that held a previous generation model Q850T. Just make sure if you are not wall mounting that your cabinet or whatever you are setting the bar on is long enough. I didn’t realize it was much longer and wider then the 850T at ~49inches long and ~5.5inches in depth. Another plus I enjoyed is the way they did the Surround Speakers. Before it was connected to a “wireless” box and then you plugged in the speakers to that box wire speaker wire. This time the surround sound speakers are just limited to finding an outlet to plug each one into.
As I already have multiple Samsung devices in my home, I already had the SmartThings App. If you don’t, I recommend downloading it and using it to set up 100%. You do not need it if you want to just plug and play, but the App unlocks so many other useful features (EQ) and can double as a remote. Using the App while setting up will calibrate the speakers to your room to the best settings automatically. I have a compatible Q TV and it wanted me to try the Q Symphony, but I turned that off. What it does is sync the amazing sound quality of the bar to also include the sound from the TV speakers. I have no idea why as TV speakers are a joke.
My favorite new features on this model is not only the inclusion of 2 HDMI Inputs (vs 1 on my older model) but they are now HDMI 2.1! Makes it super convenient for me plugging in the Series X/PS5 and later on down the road a new PC build as it can do 4K 120HZ.
Performance is top tier and does not disappoint at this price level. Movies, Music and Gaming sounded on point with no lag. The Atmos performance was excellent while watching all various types of movies with company over. They gave high praises when noticing it was a soundbar system vs amp/speaker setup.
The thing I did the most though was gaming. Series X and PS5 had me going non-stop. Sounds were scary accurate. Wind from the side, footsteps from behind and gunfire from afar. All I have to say is omg I am in heaven.
Couple of things to note though. While trying out all the sound modes (exact same as my previous model) I did find Adaptive Sound mode to be superior over Standard and Game. It just sounds more realistic and immersive while the others sound a little flat.
If I had to gripe about anything, it would be the tiny little display that I see hasn’t changed over the years. Now it’s behind the metal mesh body and really a pain to see. Luckily it turns off after choosing a mode.
Samsung’s flagship is a front runner to all competition in this market and they have the experience to back it up. Not only well-rounded to suit anyone’s taste but ease of setup and use mixed with top-tier sound quality makes the Q990D a sure choice. I would recommend this in a heartbeat.
